What is co-design and how could it impact you?

At myAutonomy, it’s our goal to keep you updated with new initiatives and changes in the NDIS space.

One recent change is the coming implementation of co-designing payments. The goal of which is to improve outcomes for participants.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What is the co-design process?

Currently, the Australian Government is trialing a new co-design process for disability support payments. The 2023-24 Budget saw the government commit $24.6 million across four years to trial blended payments and see if they offer a better option than the current fee-for-service model.

This will mean that the NDIA and Department of Social Service will be trialing blended payment methods starting in 2025.

The NDIA will be working with a group of providers to explore how blended payments may operate.

What types of payments will be included?

The trial will bring two different payment methods together.

There will be an “enrolment payment” which provides payment for supports over a period of time and an “outcome-based payment” which involves a provider being paid when the participant’s goals are achieved.

What is the focus of the trial?

The goal is to assess whether the payment system will offer improved outcomes for payments. Minister for the NDIS the Hon. Bill Shorten MP believes this may offer better results for participants.

“Under the current fee-for-service model, a participant pays a provider for their services and often that’s the end of it. The idea of a blended payment method will test if there might be a better option – where both participants and providers are clearer from the start on the desired outcome and thereby work more effectively towards that,” he said.
