How to get the most out of your NDIS plan

Having an NDIS plan can be a tremendous step towards independence, improved quality of life and increased confidence.

If you don’t know how to get the most out of your plan though, you may be missing out on key benefits and you may not be able to achieve your goals.

To help our participants thrive, we’ve put together some important points that will help ensure you’re getting the most out of your NDIS plan.

Find the right supports

As you may know, NDIS plans revolve around goals. Goal setting is, then, an integral part of having a plan.

In order to achieve those goals, the right supports are necessary. Choosing the wrong supports could be the difference between you succeeding or not.

To ensure you’re getting the right supports for you, it’s helpful to relook at your goals, and then consider which supports will help get you there. Ideally, this should be done as you create your plan.

If learning to drive, for example, is a goal in your plan, an occupational therapist – among other supports – may be essential to help achieve that goal. While if living independently is a goal, having meal-prepping and other personal care supports may be helpful.

Use your funding

You’ll likely have a range of funding categories within your plan. To make the most of your plan, it’s essential that you use your funding in meaningful ways from each of these categories.

If you leave funds underspent in one or more categories, you may not get as much funding in your next plan, or, if you don’t use your plan, you could lose it altogether.

If you’re underspending, then you’re also likely not moving towards all of the goals you’ve set out.

To ensure you are using your funds, recheck your goals and consider if there are any ways in which you could be better supported to achieve them.

Check your plan frequently

While considering finances can be daunting, we recommend keeping an eye on your plan to see where you might be over or underspending and to keep track of your goals.

It can be challenging to keep track, so checking in every month or so is recommended. And, fortunately, we’re only too happy to help with finances.

You can use the Careview App to help you stay in touch with your budget and we will send monthly statements so that you can see what has been paid from your plan in that month.
