Provider Spotlight: Focal Community Services

Experiencing disability can unfortunately result in social exclusion from community activities. One provider helping to change that is Focal Community Services.

Through Support Coordination, one-to-one support and group activities, Focal helps participants to build skills, improve movement, and connect with the community.

We spoke to the team to discover more about the supports they offer and the difference they make.

Who are Focal Community Services?

Focal Community Services is a not-for-profit organisation that offers support coordination, service delivery, after-school and vacation care programs and an amazing assortment of capacity-building groups.

How did Focal Community Services come to be?

In 1973 when Challinor Centre staff went on strike, volunteers and family members went in to help the residents. Through providing care during the strike, it was decided that there was a need for a support organisation for the people living in Challinor who had no family, or family who could not get to see them.

In February 1974, the first inaugural meeting was held. They founded an organisation called Friends of Challinor Aid League (F.O.C.A.L).

Over the last 30 years, Focal services have expanded, and the organisation has gone through multiple iterations. Focal trades under the name Focal Community Services a registered not-for-profit with charity status.

Which regions does Focal Community Services, look after?

Focal offers support coordination to all of Brisbane, Toowoomba, Lockyer Region, Redlands and the Gold Coast. Our service delivery and groups are based in Brisbane, Logan and through to Toowoomba.

What is the Focal Community Services difference?

Focal employees pride themselves on offering quality Capacity Building supports, whether it be in the form of support coordination, 1:1 support, or group activities.

Focal recently started a disability-specific basketball league and a performing arts program, both programs aimed at building fine motor skills and muscle strengthening, social inclusion and community involvement.

Our Support Coordination team are extremely experienced in all things NDIS and love being able to support their clients in making valuable changes in their life. They have diverse backgrounds both culturally and in the form of knowledge. They understand that an NDIS plan is about the clients and their choice and control when it comes to implementing and engaging in their plans and will support them to understand and navigate their plan, so they can make the most of it.

Do you have capacity?

Focal support coordination has capacity to support more clients.

Our group services and other supports are open for new clients to join. An intake meeting will be set to be able to determine the correct suitability for both the client and the workers.
