Provider Spotlight: Powerchair Sports
Experiencing disability shouldn’t mean not being able to access sports and activities. Unfortunately, sports and recreational activities often feel like exclusive places where those who have different abilities are left out.
Providers Powerchair Sports Victoria and Support Your Way are changing that through exciting sports designed specifically for those who use powerchairs.
We spoke to the team to discover more about how they’re helping provide access to sports in the community.
Tell us about your organisation…
Powerchair Sports offers exciting, social, skill-driven and dynamic sports that are specifically designed for people who use a powerchair for daily mobility.
We offer national and international pathways for participants to compete at the highest levels.
What services do you offer?
At Powerchair Sports, we offer training groups and competitions for both Powerchair Hockey and Powerchair Football.
Powerchair hockey: is based on floorball rules, 5v5, and played with lightweight hockey sticks or a T-Stick mounted to a wheelchair and is played using a lightweight plastic hockey ball.
Powerchair Football: is played with two teams of four players who use specially designed powerchairs and their speed to spin-kick an oversized soccer ball.
Powerchair Sports Victoria frequently competes in both national and international competitions, including the Australian Powerchair Football Association’s Club Championships each year.
Both sports host World Cups every four years where Australia competes against the best around the world. Our training program is designed to develop the next generation of powerchair athletes.
